Kune Kune Pigs

Kune Kune (pronounced “cooney cooney”) are a rare, heritage breed of grazing pigs that are extremely unique in their temperament, friendliness, size and characteristics. They are a small breed of pig that originated from New Zealand averaging 180-400 lbs. Kune kune are hairy, with a rotund build and have wattles hanging from their lower jaws. Their color ranges from black and white, to ginger, cream, gold-tip, black, brown and tricolored. The choice was an easy one for our farm, due to my limited grazing space I needed a non-rooting (less destruction to my pastures) breed that were not determined fence pushers (I utilize mainly hot wire on the farm for intensive rotational grazing) and I also needed a hog that wasn't going to get to a thousand pounds and cost me an arm and a leg to feed overwinter....but would still produce pork. So the Kune Kune was an easy choice for us. We currently are working with unregistered pigs, since we were selecting for meat I chose a Tapeka based line and was not too concerned with registered animals for meat production.
